Nursery Overview

An Organic Native Plant Nursery in Marin County

In the heart of Indian Valley in Novato, Home Ground Habitats is an organic native plant nursery set within a secluded, one-acre demonstration garden. Surrounded by open space and Marin’s rolling hills, the nursery offers a peaceful, immersive experience where visitors can see habitat gardening in action.

Our pesticide-free grounds are alive with biodiversity. Gravel paths wind through hedgerows, wildflower meadows, edible and medicinal natives, a small orchard, vegetable beds, and a thriving Monarch Waystation. Butterflies, bees, and birds are not occasional visitors here — they are part of the landscape.

We grow California native plants and collect local seeds to support pollinators, home gardeners, school gardens, and restoration projects throughout the North Bay. Rooted in community and sustained by dedicated volunteers, the nursery blends education, ecology, and beauty into one living space.

Growing for the Greater Good

We grow native plants in support of the Marin Chapter of the California Native Plant Society, providing roughly half the plants for their biannual fund-raising sales. We also contribute plants to regional restoration projects, habitat corridors, and nonprofit fundraisers throughout Marin, Sonoma, and the Bay Area.

From Seed to Strong Start

Volunteers collect, clean, and package seeds from local California native plants — many grown in their own habitat gardens. We sell packaged seeds and seedlings and provide detailed plant profile cards and educational handouts to help gardeners choose wisely and grow successfully.
