Eschscholzia californica

The state flower of California, the California poppy is a cheerful annual that every garden should have. It thrives in fast-draining soil and plenty of sunshine, but is also very hardy and tolerant of poor soil conditions. Sow seeds once the winter rains begin. It reseeds easily. Grows up to 12 inches tall and blooms from spring through summer.
