Toyon: California’s Iconic Native Shrub
Toyon, often called California holly or Christmas berry, is one of the most recognizable native shrubs in California. Found naturally in chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and oak woodlands, it thrives in a wide range of conditions, making it a staple in native landscapes.
Toyon is an evergreen shrub that can grow from 6 to 15 feet tall, with glossy, dark green leaves and clusters of small white flowers that bloom in early summer. By winter, it produces bright red berries that provide an important food source for birds and other wildlife, adding seasonal color to the landscape.
Highly drought-tolerant once established, Toyon requires minimal maintenance and adapts well to poor soils and full sun to partial shade. It is commonly used for hedges, screening, and habitat restoration projects, as well as in home gardens focused on sustainability and supporting local ecosystems.
Beyond its ecological value, Toyon also holds cultural significance in California history and is believed to have inspired the name “Hollywood.” Today, it remains a symbol of resilient, climate-appropriate landscaping throughout the state.
